Couple of weeks ago I learned that because cats are such well-developed predators their coat will pick up the scent of their surroundings, which basically means cats don’t really have a scent of their own. (This random piece of information is from a book “Crafting With Cat Hair: Cute Handicrafts to Make with Your Cat’ which in all its oddity caught my eye at the bookstore. No worries though, I won’t be making cat hair mittens anytime soon…)
This scentless quality of cat hair comes especially handy when the cat is hunting since it makes it difficult for the pray to detect the approaching feline. Apparently, if your cat’s coat does have an odor, it means the cat is either sick, needs a change in her diet… or that has just spent time in a, well, stinky, environment. After reading this, I naturally did what any curious human would do; smelled our cat, and indeed – she doesn’t smell like anything. I did detect a small hint of Dior J’adore though, and figured it must be difficult for our feline companions with their super senses to live with us perfumed, deodorized, showergel:ed shampoomonsters. Not that our cat seems to mind a bit of eau de toilette transfer.
I’m definitely a fan of natural, organic scents. The smell of a summer day, drying hay, the lakes, mixed with the smell of horse poo (I’m not even joking), lily of the valley and freshly cut grass. Jasmine and lilacs. The smell of a pine forest when you walk to a sheltered beach up North. Or rotting leaves and mushrooms in the autumn forest. Too bad I can’t find these in a bottle. So, without further ado, from scentless kittens to fragrance in a jar, here are few of my favorite man-made smells that do come in a bottle:
Nina Ricci: Nina
I got this from London a few years ago. Love the apple-shaped bottle!
I adore the vintage style bottle of all the Tocca perfumes. On my wishlist for sure. Violette, the newest member of the Tocca fragrance family, is described as ‘romantic, lavish, imaginative’. I also like their Giulietta scent which is ‘refreshing, feminine, delicate’.
I got this as gift last spring just before we went to New York. I had such wonderful time there and smelling this always brings back happy memories. A classic!
(And I just had to check how it is described: ‘Radiant, sensual, sophisticated’ – sounds pretty good to me!)
This actually reminds me of my dear friend – but I’d also love to wear this myself. And again, the apple-shaped bottle is just perfect and fun. Romantic, sensual and enchanting are the words for this one.
I’m also a sucker for beautifully made commercials. Now this is exactly what this scent should look like:
Guerlain: Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca
A more unisex minty citrus scent, very fresh and different from the floral scents I usually would wear. I like the classic perfume bottle look as well. Don’t own this one, but maybe some day…
So these are my current perfume favorites.
I do hope our cat approves.
